Tri-Color Tissue Paper Flower DIY

Sunday, August 20, 2017

Tri-color tissue paper flowers are super easy to make! Perfect simple decorations for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, nurseries, and birthdays. I had TONS of tissue paper leftover from re-gifting's, so I was able to finally use them up. If you don't have any of your own you can pick up packs of them at Target, The Dollar Tree, or Amazon. Now that I had a moment to finally relax after planning and executing my shower, as promised, here's a quick tutorial on how I created my tissue paper flowers!

All you need are these 3 following items (yes only 3!!):

  • Tissue paper (3 different colors, or in my case, 2. You can also use the same color for all 3 layers as well)
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
Tissue Paper Flowers Directions

Step 1: You’ll need three colors of paper, two sheets of each. Or you can use the same process using one color, or as I did, two.

Step 2: Start with your two sheets of tissue paper, folded in half. FYI when you purchase in bulk they won’t have creases like mine do, but if yours do like mine it’s no biggie. You won’t be able to tell once the flower is fluffed.

Step 3: Fold the paper in half again.

Folded into another half
Step 4: Find the corner of your rectangle that has all of the separate corners of paper (not one with a fold). Take that corner and bring it across to form a triangle. Trim off the excess paper to create a right triangle.

Removed the excess paper from the triangle portion
Step 5: Find the edge with the fold and cut, so that all eight pieces of tissue paper are separate.

Cut the folded portion
Step 6: Do this to all three of your colors. You will have eight squares each. In my case I layered black, white, and black or vice versa. I had various sizes of tissue paper to work with which was fine. If this is also something that you cross if you're recycling tissue paper, just layer the larger ones behind the smaller ones. Don't worry the end product will still be amazing!

Step 7: I used 3 sheets of black, 3 of white, and two of black. You can use the leftover sheets to make more flowers. I used the trimmed off excess paper from when we created the triangle in step 4. Stack the tissue paper in this order: 3 sheets of black on the bottom, 3 of white in the middle, and two of black on top.

Step 8: Fold the paper, accordion style. I got about 8 or so folds.

Step 9: Separate the layers.

Step 10: Re-accordion each layer, and cut the ends, creating different shapes. Cut triangles for the leaves, round for the petals, and fringe for the center.

Step 11: Open the layers back up and re-stack them in their original order.

Step 12: Pinch the accordion and staple in the middle.

Step 13: Fluff up the layers of the flower, starting with the black center. Be careful, because the tissue paper can rip easily. Grip the paper toward the inside of the flower, instead of the edges, to help minimize tearing.

Step 14: Repeat on the other side, and voila! You have a tri-color fancy-schmancy flower. They looked so professional, and they saved me some money on an already expensive wedding shower! If you'd like to create a photo backdrop with them, you can add fringe, cloth, or garland quite easily. I securely stapled each of my finished products to my golden fringe backdrop, and it was a big hit at our shower (full post can be seen here)!
